My Big Alkaline Trio Project
03/10/10 at 20:52:56
Hello, I'm GBD, a new member here, but I come seeking input from other Alkaline Trio fans as I try to compose a play/musical, and the music of course, would be all Alkaline Trio songs. This isn't something I plan to make money off of, but more or less just make a video and hopefully get it popular enough to where the band might see it and enjoy something the fans made for them (instead of viceversa). I don't have anything figured out in specifics yet, because I figure that before I get over my head in petty details, I'm going to need a story first. Problem is that I don't have a very good editing eye, because I am biased in the sense that I love everything the band has ever done and would include every song if it were possible. So here I am, stuck on step 1 in the long process.
I thought to help out, I could give you some guidelines and maybe with all our creative juices combined, we can come up with a great storyline, with corresponding songs, and I can begin filling in the dialogue and composition. I will of course give credit in the final stage of the "production" to everyone that helps. I hope you all find this idea as fun and challenging as I do, after all, this is why I came
Sooooo....
Guidelines
In honor of Alkaline Trio, I think if they could have a say in the "feel" of the drama, I'm almost positive they'd like it to be a tragedy. I'd like to keep the storyline, events, and imagery dark. I'm thinking maybe a Dark/Tragic Romance/Adventure?
I have songs that stick out in my head that I just feel would be perfect for a musical--"Into the Night" being the one that sticks out to me the most. I don't know why, but I've been listening to this song a lot lately despite owning the new album, and it is what inspired me to write a musical. It's a simple song that can be utilized many ways. This song is not required in your ideas, but maybe it will help you get inspired as well. I just see an ending scene with curtains closing after the last "Into the niiiiiiiight!"
At the most, I would like to have 7-12 songs used. I know this is merely a fraction of their repertoire, and I wish I could include more. If I can compose a very intense, emotional, edgeofyourseat story, I'll be more willing to extend it. Right now I am looking at a time frame between 45min-75min. The entire song does not have to be used. If musically acceptable, parts can be used as mood-setters and emphasis on situations, or split up in different "acts," which is what I had in mind for "Into the night" if it ends up fitting into the story and making the cut. Songs may also be used for dialoague/monologues.
Lyrics can be replaced to accommodate gender, so don't let a song with specific certain he/she references stop you from using it.
Of course, this link will be helpful and I'm sure none of you are strangers to it:

I will be brainstorming on my end all day, and I hope you feel up to the challenge and want to participate in the only cool thing I'll probably ever do! Good luck, and any advice on any aspect is more than welcome!

welcome. I'd say a story about a man who grows up being a slacker in school - "stupid kid" - and starts drinking at an early age - maybe use "cooking wine?" I'd say for the dramatic feel, have the guy be really depressed because he does not have a girlfriend and feels all alone.
He finally meets a girl after several years and falls in love. In the scenes that show them together, use "clavicle" first, but also use "every thug needs a lady." I also see a scene of them laying together under the cover of darkness and "sorry about that" fitting perfectly. The relationship should go smooth for about the first 8 months or so, then things get rocky. They fight a lot and break up eventually. I see the screen fading to black and the opening of "bleeder" playing as the screen slowly brightens. I see him resorting to drinking himself into the hospital, as he is laying there depressed - "over and out" begins to play as his life flashes before his eyes.
now the part I first thought of when I heard you wanted "into the night." in the middle of a cold, blustery snowstorm (still in the characters dream), we see the character walking through a dark forest with a handgun (this could be the part of his life where he holds a gun to his head but decides not to commit suicide) while "I found away" plays. He hears police sirens and runs away. "into the night" plays while still in his dream. he returns home. He ends up in the hospital after trying to slit his wrists at home in his bathtub. He is found by a loved one. He is in a hospital bed and just after his dream, the movie/musical shifts back to present time and he dies. THE END
hope that helps.

The story should involve broken romances, murder, alcohol, drugs, addiction, death, suicide and self harm.....and more cow bell.

This is all really great so far and has kickstarted some of the creativity in my brain, thanks a lot!
And I agree with you Chris. It should encompass all those things--which I believe are the ingredients to a great drama
